The INCA Public Workshop, organised by the INCA project consortium presented the results of the INCA project and latest developments in infections and cancer research in general. The Workshop - New Frontiers in Infection-related Cancer took place from 28th April to 30th April 2010 on the shores of picturesque Lake Annecy in France.
At a glance:
The EU Integrated Project INCA ("The role of chronic infections in the development of cancer") started on January 1st, 2006 and ends on June 30th, 2010. INCA brings together scientists working on human papillomaviruses as the cause of cervical cancer, on Helicobacter pylori the cause of gastric cancer, on Epstein-Barr Virus (the cause of several types of lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and a small proportion of gastric cancer), Kaposi Sarcoma Herpesvirus (the cause of Kaposi Sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma and the plasma cell variant of multicentric Castleman´s Disease) and HTLV-I, the cause of Adult T-cell Leukaemia/Lymphoma.
During the last 4 years, several interesting discoveries were made by INCA scientists, which improve our understanding on how these infectious agents cause cancer and/or help to develop new diagnostic tools. INCA scientists have held a joint workshop each year since 2006. In 2010 the final meeting has been opened to the general public and ran from April 28th-30th, 2010.
The programme featured talks from invited leaders in the field of infection and cancer, some of whom provided with a historical perspective, while others introduced new emerging topics and technologies. The meeting was on one hand dedicated to the results of INCA research presented by INCA group leaders and their postdoctoral fellows and students. On the other hand it included essential educational talks on high-throughput technologies and the complexities of analysing large data sets and talks from European guest speakers from the infection and cancer fields.
